More Brits jet off than ever before 24th October 2007
Britons are jetting off on holiday more than ever, according to a new survey by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).
August 2007 saw a record-breaking number of UK holidaymakers heading overseas with more than 69 million Brits travelling abroad between August 2006 and August 2007 - one million more travellers compared to the previous year.
The United States and Europe both saw a rise in British tourists this year. While visits to North America rose by 1 per cent, long-haul destinations are also growing in popularity, thanks to more frequent flights to exotic destinations.
Recent interest from property investors in emerging markets outside Europe, such as Brazil, Thailand, Cape Verde and the Dominican Republic is also contributing to the rise in overseas travel. Many holidaymakers now use their holiday time to look for second homes or timeshare properties, and this year long haul destinations rose by 7 per cent, representing 1 in 7 of all trips taken.
The overall increase has been put down to a greater number of cheap flights, which are now available to almost all destinations, as well as the chance to get away from the British weather.
Britain's bleak summer of 2007 will no doubt go down in history as a major washout, but it proved to be good news for travel agents and holiday companies like Club La Costa Resorts & Hotels who reported record high occupancy at their resorts in Spain and Tenerife in August and September.
Chairman Roy Peires said: "Both Tenerife and the Costa del Sol will always be popular with families in particular because the combination of climate and facilities is extremely hard to beat. We are expanding even further into the Mediterranean with new Club La Costa resorts planned for the southwest coast of Turkey as well as the Costa del Sol to meet member demand for luxury accommodation with outstanding onsite amenities."
Justin Fleming, ABTA president, confirmed: "Our love affair with foreign travel is in fine shape. Europe is still our number one destination but we are increasingly looking to visit other parts of the world and ABTA members are at the forefront of making these dreams reality."
